FAISALABAD:

Two men police said were robbers were killed on Sunday in what the police said was an encounter.

Relatives of the deceased later staged a protest demonstration and alleged that the ‘encounter’ was a fake.

Police spokesman Ameer Nasir Javaid said that the CIA police had received a tip-off about two men who were fleeing after a robbery near Khannuana Bypass.

He said Inspector Zafar Iqbal and his team rushed to the spot and caught the robbers red-handed snatching a motorcycle from a citizen.

He said the robbers shot at the police, injuring Head Constable Ansar Altaf. The injured policeman was taken to district headquarters hospital, where he was said to be out of danger. Back at the spot, the exchange of fire between the police and the robbers continued for 30 minutes before both the robbers were shot and captured. They succumbed on their way while being taken to a hospital.

Police said they had been identified as Faisal alias Pana of Madina Town and Aamir Nadeem alias Deema of Chak 203-RB.

Investigation SSP Rao Zameerul Haq, too, visited the scene. He said a Suzuki Mehran used by the robbers had been seized. Police said they had found a sub-machinegun and a 0.222 bore rifle from the vehicle.

The police spokesman said that the deceased robbers had been arrested for robbery a few days ago. He said they had fled the Tariqabad police post the night ago.

He said Faisal was wanted for 14 robberies, and Nadeem of nine. He said a police team had been looking for them for several months.

Later, relatives of the deceased men protested against the police and accused them of extra-judicial killing.

Muhammad Akram, a relative of Faisal, said Faisal and Nadeem had not escaped from the lock-up. They were “released” by the police and killed, he said. The protesters demanded that the law minister take notice of the killings and order an inquiry.
