Senate opposition moves privilege motion against Chaudhry Nisar
Senators want interior minister to take back 'incorrect' terrorism figures he earlier provided.
ISLAMABAD:
Opposition members in the Senate have moved a privilege motion against Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Express News reported on Friday.
The decision was announced by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) senator Raza Rabbani during a press conference.
Around 25 senators have signed the motion.
Rabbani said the motion states that the terrorism-related figures earlier provided by Nisar in the Upper House were incorrect and should be taken back. He said it is a democratic right of the senators to make such a demand.
The opposition parties had also sought an apology from Nisar for misleading the house and providing incorrect figures about the victims of terrorism.
Heated debate
A war of words broke out between Rabbani and Nisar on October 30 after Nisar presented figures of casualties from terrorist attacks – stats which were swiftly challenged by an ANP senator who called them a “pack of lies”.
PPP senator Aitzaz Ahsan further asked the interior minister to take back the statistics and return with correct numbers.
Nisar remained unmoved in his seat and this response triggered a heated altercation among the members of the two benches.
Later the combined opposition excluding MQM walked out of the house.
