Non-party polls: LHC defers hearing on Punjab LB laws
Petitions say new local government laws were introduced by ignoring articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution.
LAHORE:
The Lahore High Court has deferred the hearing of petitions challenging the newly promulgated local government laws in Punjab till today (Friday).
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s Punjab chapter President Ijaz Chaudhry, Pakistan Peoples Party’s Punjab chapter, Majlis-e-Wahdat-e-Muslimeen, the Pakistan Lawyers Foundation and several others had filed identical petitions challenging the new legislation, particularly the provision for holding local body polls on a non-party basis. They argued that this provision in particular went against the spirit of the Constitution.
Concluding their arguments on Thursday, the counsels for the petitioners said the new local government laws were introduced by ignoring articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution, and violated the fundamental rights of the people and the concept of democracy. They requested the court to declare the new laws unconstitutional.
