Local govt elections: Pleas against new law deferred

A division bench of LHC defers petitions challenging the Punjab Local Government Act of 2013.

LAHORE:
A division bench of the Lahore High Court has deferred petitions challenging the Punjab Local Government Act of 2013, particularly its provision for partyless polls, for Friday (today). A lawyer representing the Punjab government is currently making arguments in defence of the new law. The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, the Pakistan People’s Party, the Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen and the Pakistan Lawyers Foundation moved the petitions against the Act. Their counsel have concluded their arguments. The petitioners say that partyless elections would go against Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution and the spirit of democracy. They have asked the court to declare the Act unconstitutional.
