FAISALABAD:

Former city nazim Mumtaz Cheema and former town nazim Sajjad Haider have decided to join the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, PTI Punjab President Ejaz Ahmed Chaudhry announced on Tuesday.

He said this at a convention in Samundri to review the arrangements for the upcoming local government elections.

Chaudhry said sugar mill owners were not looking after the farmers and the government should protect their interests.

He said higher inflation and dwindling subsidies to the farming community had made it difficult for them to earn a livelihood and support their families.

He said that the government’s “anti-poor policies” were quite evident. He said taxes were imposed on the middle and the lower-middle classes while “the rich continue to enjoy exemptions.”

Chaudhry demanded that the government pay immediate attention to the problems faced by farmers and provide them with subsidised seeds and fertilisers.

“They should be provided an opportunity to increase farm productivity,” he said.

He said the PTI would be victorious in the upcoming local government elections.

He promised that the PTI would also stand by the farmers and would keep pressuring the government to resolve the problems of the sugar cane growers in the area.
