Bouncing back: Opposition denounces CM’s outburst in assembly
ANP leader criticises K-P govt for not conducting local body polls within 90 days.
PESHAWAR:
Opposition parties in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) assembly on Tuesday denounced Chief Minister (CM) Pervez Khattak’s outburst against opposition members a day earlier.
Khattak had lashed out at the ANP, claiming the previous government had turned the province into an “auction house” by “selling out” Pukhtuns and rampant corruption.
Addressing a joint press conference at the Peshawar Press Club, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) parliamentary leader Maulana Lutfur Rehman, Awami National Party (ANP) parliamentary leader Sardar Hussain Babak, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz MPA Sardar Aurangzeb Nalutha and Pakistan Peoples Party’s Nighat Orakzai criticised the chief minister’s remarks against opposition lawmakers on the assembly floor on Monday.
Sardar Babak said the provincial government was using allegations as crutches. He said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government had done away with the traditions of the province and that after levelling allegations, the CM should have also listened to the opposition. However, they were not given time by the speaker, he added.
Babak said it never occurred to Pervez Khattak to speak of corruption while he remained a minister in the ANP government for about four years. He went on to claim PTI and its allies were responsible for the destruction of the province, whereas ANP had successfully confronted terrorism in its tenure. He also criticised the government for not conducting local body polls within 90 days, as promised. Babak maintained opposition parties will approach the court against the abolishment of union councils in the proposed local government bill.
JUI-F parliamentary leader Maulana Lutfur Rehman said opposition lawmakers had only spoken of justice in distributing development funds, and that they had expected a positive response from the government.
