Sindh government has signed agreement with Chinese firms for generating more than 6,000 megawatts of electricity from coal and wind. This was announced by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah at a press conference after his arrival from China.
The chief minister said a memorandum of understanding was inked between China power international holding company and Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company for putting up power plants of 6,000MWs.
“Initially, the Chinese company will install 1,200 MW project for which coal will be supplied to the company from block-I and Block II of Thar coal field,” he said adding that the company will visit next month before further progress on it.
“Chinese companies have expressed satisfaction and have assured us to bring more investment in Pakistan, especially in Sindh. We have promised them that we will build the basic infrastructure and ensure law and order,” he said, adding that the government offered guaranteed return on equity investment of 20% in USD terms for all Thar coal-based mining and power projects, in order to encourage greater investor participation.
Shah said officials of the provincial government have also made an agreement to set up wind power plant of 249.6MWs near Jhimpir where local companies are already working with international firms to develop wind farms to generate 600MW. He said that new wind power plant can take 18 to 20 months to be operational.
The CM has asked Prime Minister of Pakistan to use Thar coal for the proposed power plant at Gadani.
He further assured that his government will establish 5,000MW power plant in Keti Bunder.
Ready for LB polls
Shah has said that Sindh was ready to hold the local government elections and would accept whatever decision is made by the Supreme Court.
While talking to media on MQM’s petition against Sindh local government law, he said, “The law was passed after consultation with other stakeholders. The majority of lawmakers and parties in Sindh assembly have consensus on it. We will with apex court decision.”
Talking about law and order situation in Karachi, CM said the operation will continue until Karachi is free from target killers and extortionists.
