Encroachment : Squatters ousted from Samanabad

LDA launches an operation against squatters on public property in Samanabad.

LAHORE:
The Lahore development Authority (LDA) has launched an operation against squatters on public property in Samanabad. Encroachments are being cleared to make way for the construction of a dual-carriageway from Ferozepur Road to Multan Road. Chief Engineer Israr Saeed said hundreds of houses, shops and workshops had sprung up in the area over the years. He said the LDA had earlier served notices to occupants of the land along the Samanabad drain. Saeed said the cost of the project was estimated at Rs1.84 billion. He said the project was designed to ease traffic flow from Ferozepur Road towards the motorway and Lahore Ring Road via Multan Road-Gulshan-i-Ravi. Meanwhile, the LDA director general tasked the authority’s land acquisition collector to purchase some private land along the drain. The project, contracted to a private company, is being supervised by the LDA and the National Engineering Services of Pakistan (NESPAK). More than four kilometres of the road alongside the Samanabad drain will be improved and widened by 60 feet. The road will have then three lanes on each side. The project is expected to be completed in six months. In the first phase, the LDA has demolished illegal structures from the LOS side of the road up to the wall of the Rescue 1122 Academy.
