ISLAMABAD:
The administration of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences came under fire for the inordinate delay in installing incinerators for safely disposing of hospital waste in the Senate on Friday.
The sub-committee of the Senate Standing Committee on Capital Administration and Development Division (CADD), chaired by Senator Kamil Ali Agha, expressed displeasure over the incompetence and negligence of Pims officials.
Agha said the hospital administration was taking advantage of the absence of incinerators in the hospital and the delay in the budget provision by the Planning Commission and was facilitating a special interest group.
The committee expressed anger over not being provided detailed information about the collection and safe disposal of hospital waste and payments made to the National Cleaner Production Centre (NCPC) in Morgah, Rawalpindi which is burning the hospital’s waste at present.
“The Pims administration has failed to hide this corruption worth millions of rupees and tried to dodge the committee, which is unacceptable,” said Agha.
The senator directed the hospital administration to immediately send a proposal to the concerned ministries for provision of funds for installing incinerators. “Strict action will be taken against people found involved in this scam.”
The committee suggested Pims take technical support from the World Health Organisation and other international donor agencies for installation of the incinerator. In response, the Pims acting chief, professor Mehmood Jamal, informed the committee that the hospital administration had not received any response from the government regarding its requests for funds.
Senator Rubina Khalid said that for several years, the Pims administration had been delaying installation of incinerators as part of an underhand deal with NCPC.
