PESHAWAR: In a search operation carried out by the police and security forces, 200 people were arrested from Danishabad, Saddat Town, Rashid Garhi and Zargarabad on Thursday morning.

Security forces and police cordoned off the area within the jurisdiction of Yakatoot police station and carried out a comprehensive search operation. Around 200 suspects were arrested and shifted to the police station for interrogation.

“This is an area where most of the IDPs from Mohmand and Khyber agencies are currently residing and the operation was mainly targeting terrorists who could possibly reside along with these IDPs,” said a police official, adding they had decided to conduct the operation ahead of Muharram.

The official said the presence of militants inside the city was an open secret, adding these people were also involved in kidnapping and extortion cases.

“We have recovered an AK-47 rifle, 110 rounds of bullets, two rifles and six pistols,” he said. The official said the arrested men will be released after interrogation.

The search operation was launched at 4am and continued till 7am. Police was assisted by elite force commandos and women police constables in the operation. They said the primary objective was searching the houses on rent, a task completed to their satisfaction.

A similar operation was conducted in Bela Neko Khan in the jurisdiction of Chamkani police station on Wednesday morning. Around 42 people were arrested in the operation.

Despite the strict security arrangements in the city, four policemen were killed a few days earlier when unidentified motorcyclists opened fire at them on Ring Road in the jurisdiction of Paharipura police station.
