A day before his much awaited meeting with US President Barack Obama, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif announced his government’s soft foreign policy stance vis-a-vis its eastern neighbour, India, promising that he would go the “extra mile” to make peace with India.
In the same vein, the premier described Pakistan’s relations with the United States ‘vital’, but called CIA’s drone campaign in tribal regions a ‘major irritant’ in the bilateral ties.
Relations between Pakistan and India have soured since the killing of five Indian troops in a deadly ambush in August that triggered skirmishes between their militaries along the Line of Control (LoC) in the disputed Himalayan state of Kashmir.
However, Premier Nawaz said the archrivals can resolve all issues, including Kashmir, through dialogue. “I wish to assure this august audience that Pakistan desires to live in peace with its neighbour,” he said at the US Institute of Peace, a think tank. “If we sit down together, if we seriously address these issues, I don’t think we will face any problem.”
“Kashmir, of course, is a very difficult issue and very difficult to resolve but I think, by sitting and talking, we will be able to find some way of resolving that, too,” he added. “Because that is a flashpoint not only in the region, but the whole world,” he said of Kashmir.
Potential of Pakistan-India friendship and cordial relations between the estranged neighbours has been a favourite topic during the premier’s meetings with US authorities in Washington.
“Had our countries not wasted their precious resources in a never-ending arms race, we would not only have avoided the futile conflicts, but also emerged as stable and prosperous nations,” he said.
Drones ‘detrimental’ to CT efforts
Prime Minister Nawaz said drone strikes were detrimental to Islamabad’s efforts at eliminating terrorism. “This issue has become a major irritant in our bilateral relationship – I would, therefore, stress the need for an end to drone attacks.”
But the premier positively added that contrary to perceptions, Pakistan-US relations had stood the test of time. Despite occasional hiccups, the solid foundation of this vital relationship has always weathered storms and turbulence, he added.
“As democracy takes root in Pakistan, there is scope for building a strong and stable partnership between the two countries. They should be based on mutual respect and mutual interests as clearly articulated by President Obama in his Cairo speech.”
Despite the planned US drawdown in Afghanistan, there would be a continuing need for close cooperation, he said.
The prime minister also renewed his call for greater trade access for Pakistan to the United States and invited American entrepreneurs to invest in Pakistan’s energy and other sectors.
The United States, meanwhile, reciprocated the call for warmer ties. The White House described Pakistan-US relationship as ‘enormously valuable’, saying that despite differences, Washington wants the ties to proceed on a positive trajectory. “The president looks forward to welcoming Prime Minister Sharif to the White House on Wednesday,” said Obama’s spokesman Jay Carney in a statement on Tuesday.
‘Incentives for Pak-American community soon’
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif revealed that his government would shortly announce a package of incentives to facilitate expatriate Pakistanis’ investment in various sectors of the economy.
In an hour-long address to the Pakistani-American community, he advocated the case for more trade with the United States, instead of relying on aid. “The United States is Pakistan’s largest trading partner – we want greater trade and want to remove roadblocks in the way of trade expansion.”
His government would strive for the resolution of the energy crisis within its tenure and invited expatriate Pakistanis to invest in the area that promises attractive returns, he said.
To Pakistani-Americans, the prime minister assured of his support for an end to discriminatory treatment towards overseas Pakistani for holding dual nationalities.
Matters of defence
The US defence leadership, including Dr Ashton Carter, the deputy secretary of defence, and Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin Dempsey, called on the prime minister. Matters related to bilateral defence cooperation and regional security were discussed during the meeting, according to the Pakistan Embassy.
He informed the US defence leadership that Pakistan looked forward to an enduring and broad-based defence cooperation with the United States in the future.
Dr Ashton Carter expressed satisfaction that Ground Lines of Communication, GLOC, were facilitating movement of the US/ISAF retrograde and sustenance cargo through Pakistan.
The two sides noted that substantial progress had been achieved in the areas of counter-IEDs, counter-terrorism and border coordination mechanism with Afghanistan and ISAF.

I think ur pm comes with old oath from your army, that is Kashmir Kashmir Kashmir... Obama don't care about the subject itself, but instead instructed sherif to curb extremism.
@Adina: --"Pakistan is a peacful country and would definately go extra miles for having peace negotiations with India,"
Mr. Madina - the peaceful country receives at least one bomb blast on daily basis peacefully by the militants/ extremists. Yes, the country has shown peaceful steps not to raise concern even for the no go area for the Pakistani citizens, administrators/ army . Peace is visible in taking steps to negotiate with terrorists who is unwilling to accept the constitution of Pakistan. Yes, Pakistan is firing on LOC peacefully to provide cover to infiltrate their strategic assets into India administered Kashmir to strike terrorist activities . Really the NS has gone extra miles for the peace and normalization of relation with India. Ground realities speak a different story as actions speaks louder than words. normalization of relation will come with trade.
@ali:
Pakistan has been falsely blaming India of water theft for the last 4-5 years. Since then, Pakistan is facing calamities of flooding year after year on increasing proportions.
India has to brush up its tactics towards Pakistan. Main hindrance to reinstate peace in the region is offensive military posture towards Pakistan. In marked contrast to India’s high standing across the globe where it shows a humane face and claims to be the champion of democracy and secularism, India doesn't enjoy good reputation within South Asia where its interests clash with neighboring countries.
Pakistan will go for even extra mile for peace but India will consider it illegal infiltration. hence India will reply in the tone of bullets and bombs. India must show some flexibility on critical issues like Kashmir and water theft.
This is really an historic point that standing at an international platform Pakistan’s PM called open dialogue with full assurance of cooperation. The historic rivalry is not hidden and this open invitation in front of the international community very much reflected the Pakistani intention to resolve the ongoing conflicts with India. Now the direction needs to be settled to give relief to the people of both sides. Additionally, it’s true that drone attacks are simply creating strong opposition among the masses. Rather of countering terrorism, these drone attacks raise the rate of terrorism and anti-American sentiments. War or violent attacks or hostile statements are not the result oriented rather they created more fussy situations. It’s time to sit across the tables and carve out the resolutions.
Hehehe.
Instead of taking extra mile towards New Delhi, take it towards Rawalpindi.
First solve the 'Rawalpindi' problem.
Pakistan is a peacful country and would definately go extra miles for having peace negotiations with India, for the maintainace of regional peace and stability. In contrast to this India is behaving as a reluctant in the way of establishing peace relations with Pakistan. But government of Pakista must go on for having having peaceful resolutions to the standby conflicts between the two states which includes Kashmir dispute, border issue and also strategic issues. It cannot be happen over a night effortss from both sides would be required.
NS bogey of Kashmir is a poor attempt to distract world attention from the dire straits in Pakistan ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ It will succeed as much as Kargil did!.
No diplomatic gains can accrue by talking nice things that the World wants to hear and doing what one has already decided to do. Nawaz Sharif being a three time PM should know that sweet talk is very different from firm action, which alone can save and transform Pakistan. Good intentions is admirable but will produce results, when followed by actions.
however, I guess probably Pak army understood the same as 'extra' miles into Indian territory !!!
Nawaz Shariff by giving MFN status to India would have shown the extra mile he want to cover for better relation with India, but this is just a ploy to dispel the image of Pakistan as epicenter of terrorism and show it as peace loving.
Mr PM , you do not need to go extra mile for any peace with India. Just charge and punish all the killers, suicide bombers, cricket team attackers, your army attackers, and ofcourse the mumbai attack plotters. That will be going light years for peace with INdia, I guess.
@kalash: Sure like jizya tax.
@Francis D'souza: I can see Russian submarines already in Indian ocean ready to surface before 7th fleet reach there and very glorious sight to see 7th fleet running back to where it sailed from . History repeats itself ...
PM Nawaz Sharif does not need 'to go extra mile for peace with India' to reduce 'South Asia tensions',
He only have 'to go extra mile for peace with' his Pakistan Army Generals to reduce 'South Asia tensions',
How is he going to get peace with India when Pakistanis these days want to go to war every time they see a bollywood commercial on their channels? Focus on the Taliban please! Peace talks with India can be stalled and have been stalled. Either Nawaz is using the India peace talks as a cover up of the fact that the army isn't letting him deal with the Taliban or he's delusional.
Pakistan and the rest of the world is having a serious "Pakistan problem". He is talking about "Kashmir problem". Old habits.
@TJ, why are you confusing 'imposing sharia' with 'killing innocent citizens'. the whole concept of sharia has been distorted through media. if correctly applied, it should be the goal of any muslim majority country. and true sharia does guarantee rights for the minorities.
For some reason, I still have some faith in him. I think he is a changed person this time around but his brother and the army as well as many in his party are the problem. I think he is trying his best but has lot of opposition. Though his thoughts are good, I do not think that he has enough support and strength to carry it forward.
I can already see the American 7th fleet steaming to free Kashmir and hand it over to Pakistan. :-)
A history lesson: "What you cannot win on the battlefield..can never be won at the negotiating table".
This person can never be trusted
"PM to go ‘extra mile’ for peace with India "
India will be very happy if you and your assets remain just within "zero" mile of your borders. Your peace offers are very scary most of the time as they follow by Kargils and LOC firings.
PM made meaningful pledges. But Pakistanis urge PM to make a pledge to take an immediate action against militants and taliban. Dialogue with those who give up arms and immediate action against those who want to impose sharia in pakistan and kill its innocent citizens.
