KARACHI:

Two cousins who were arrested over their alleged involvement in the murder of a policeman were killed in police custody in the city’s outskirts on Tuesday.

The deceased were identified as 19-year-old Baz Mohammad and 20-year-old Mohammad Younus. They were arrested by the Gadap City police and were killed within the Sharafi Goth police station’s remits.

Police officials said that the deceased were wanted in the murder case of police constable Bagh Ali on October 19 and some robberies, said Malir SSP Nasir Aftab. “We took the suspects to the crime scene in Sharafi Goth but a gang of robbers at the site thought that we had come to raid their hideout. They opened fire at the police, killing both the suspects.” SSP Aftab said that ASI Babar Hashmi was also injured in the firing. The robbers, however, reportedly managed to escape before the police could retaliate.  The families of the deceased rejected the police’s version, saying that the death of their beloved was a result of extrajudicial killings.

Raids and arrests

As part of the ongoing operation, Rangers claimed to have apprehended 29 alleged criminals on Tuesday, confiscating weapons from them.

Maripur police claimed to have apprehended three suspects during a targeted raid. According to SHO Shafiq Tanoli, the accused persons were involved in around 50 cases of targeted killings. Their political affiliations were not disclosed.
