KARACHI: Pakistan’s poor run continues as the greenshirts ended the four-nation Super Series Hockey 9s at the bottom after succumbing to Malaysia 2-1 in the bronze medal match in Perth.

Australia, on the other hand, clinched the title with an action packed 9-4 win over Argentina in the final.

Seeking a revival after failing to qualify for the 2014 World Cup, a young Pakistan team squandered its chances throughout the event, ending at a dismal fourth spot in the four-nation tournament.

After winning their opening game against Malaysia, Pakistan missed a golden opportunity against Argentina despite grabbing a four-goal lead with the match ending as a 5-5 stalemate.

They failed to book their berth in the final after a loss against Australia in their last league match on Saturday.

However, yesterday was the worst day for the national team as it endured a loss to the lowly Malaysian team that lost all its league matches.

Pakistan never looked comfortable against the side which they toppled 5-3 earlier in the tournament.

On the other hand, Malaysia looked the better side and dominated most of the proceedings throughout 40 minutes of play.

They attacked Pakistan at will and were effective in defence, nullifying aggression from the opposition.

Malaysia’s all-round display yielded result with Azlan Misron gaining the lead in the 17th minute for a 1-0 advantage at half-time.

They doubled their lead in the second session after Izwan Firdaus was rewarded for crafting a 26th minute move.

However, Pakistan hit back through Arsalan Qadir, who converted a penalty corner two minutes later.

The Mohammad Imran-led side made several attempts for an equaliser but failed to grasp further success as Malaysia sealed the bronze medal.

Australia thrash Argentina

Meanwhile, Australia claimed the title after defeating Argentina in a high-scoring final.

The Kookaburras who remained unbeaten in the league phase displayed their best show of the tournament, scoring nine goals in the final. The hosts were leading 5-2 at half-time before they netted four more in the next half to seal the impressive win.
