Tech policing: Police impound three cars over weekend
The vehicles and a bike had fake registration plates.
ISLAMABAD:
The Islamabad Police impounded three cars and a motorcycle for having fake registration plates over the weekend.
The vehicles were seized after police personnel deployed at pickets used the Islamabad Police’s new mobile verification system to check the authenticity of the plates.
According to the police, the results of the three cars --- IDC-1669, PD-638, LS-155 --- and a motorcycle, HN-274, returned negative after the police ran them through the system.
In one of the cases, the IDC-1669 which belonged to a Suzuki FX according to the verification system was being used with a Suzuki Bolan. After a policeman deployed at the Pak-China Centre police picket stopped the car for routine checking, suspect Gul Faraz was arrested for fraud and misuse of registration plates.
The Islamabad Police has recently created a customised database with three components that include registration data of vehicles, data of stolen vehicles and crime record of proclaimed offenders, court absconders, military deserters and convicted persons, including those just presented with charge-sheets.
In order to check record of any vehicle or suspect, the data can be accessed by picket in-charges and patrol officers through cell phones.
