KARACHI:
The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has prepared to dispose of at least one million offals starting today.
Ahead of Eidul Azha, the metropolitan corporation has established control rooms in 18 zones of the city, with a central control room set up in Civic Centre, according to a statement issued by the corporation. These control rooms will be on alert to make sure waste is disposed of properly and hides are not being snatched. The control rooms will be on duty round-the-clock on all three days of Eid.
KMC administrator Saqid Ahmed Soomro urged people to place offal only at proper garbage dumping points near their homes. He requested people to avoid throwing offal on roads, streets, parks, empty plots, drains or any other public place.
For the next three days, 140 vehicles and 250 employees of the KMC will lift offal and other waste from the 27 main streets of Karachi, said Soomro. The remaining areas, including narrow lanes inside neighbourhoods, will be taken care of by the respective district municipal corporations. A total of 50 vehicles in each DMC will be working on smaller streets.
Religious tolerance was one of the main themes that emerged during a meeting between all charity organisations at his office, he revealed. The government will take all possible steps to ensure that citizens are able to perform Eid rituals peacefully, he promised.
Security arrangements
Sindh IGP Shahid Nadeem Baloch has directed the police to remain vigilant during Eidul Azha holidays, adding that intelligence reports must be collected and shared promptly. “More than 19,400 police personnel will perform security duties at 3,987 mosques, 315 imambargahs, 330 Eidgahs, 270 open spaces for Eid prayers and other public places,” announced the Sindh Police spokesperson.
No load-shedding
The Eid holidays will also provide residents a respite from load-shedding, according to the Karachi Electric Supply Company, which promised that no outages will take place from 8pm on Tuesday till 8am on Saturday. “Our customer care teams will nevertheless remain active throughout Eidul Azha,” said a company spokesperson, Ahmed Faraz. “In case of any fault, residents can immediately contact them at 118.” He explained that this respite from load-shedding was made possible after improved gas supply to the power utility.
