PESHAWAR: Health Minister Shaukat Yousafzai suspended two senior gynaecologists of the Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) on Sunday for not showing up at work.

According to an official at the LRH, a 13-year old girl, who was released from captivity of kidnappers after 18 days, was brought in the emergency ward late Saturday night. When the health minister reached the hospital to inquire about the case there were no doctors in the gynaecology ward during duty hours.

The minister then ordered to suspend Dr Gulrukh Qazi and Senior Registrar Dr Sumaira who were absent. He also asked for an inquiry against the LRH Medical Superintendent Dr Iqbal Afridi.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Yousafzai said the government has promised to provide free medical treatment to the people. When doctors are provided all facilities, they need to perform as well. He also added action will be taken against those do not do well in their jobs.

LRH Chief Executive Arshad Javed confirmed the news, adding they will hold an inquiry on the absent doctors today (Monday) before taking any action.

He informed that the injured girl has received treatment and her condition is stable.
