KARACHI:

Pakistan coach Jamshed Gul is confident that the duo of Nasir Iqbal and Farhan Mehboob will be satisfactorily fit in time for the Professional Squash Association Individual World Championship, which will be played in Manchester from October 28 – November 3.

The players are engaged in an extensive one-month training programme for the mega event under the supervision of Gul at the Mushaf Squash Complex in Islamabad.

Both will play in the qualifiers of the championship and the official believes that they will be in peak physical condition for the tournament.

“Nasir and Farhan are currently undergoing extensive training,” Gul told The Express Tribune.

“Although we’re short of time, I’m confident that they will hit peak fitness with the amount of effort they are putting in. They are training twice a day with the aim of competing with the top 10-20 players of the world.”

The coach further said that while Mehboob possesses the talent and skills to reach the top of the world rankings, he needs to improve his fitness as well as work on controlling his aggression. On the other hand, he feels that Iqbal has almost negligible fitness issues but should strive to improve his game.

“We’ll give these players tough practice matches as the camp progresses, probably after a two-day Eidul Azha holiday. We’ve invited all the top national players in the camp in order to give maximum exposure to the World Open participants ahead of the tournament”.
