Crime: ‘Extortionist’ arrested red-handed

A man the police said was an extortionist was arrested in Rahim Yar Khan on Friday with help from intelligence services.


City DSP Ishaaq Dhiloon said that the man kidnapped people and told their families to transfer money into his mobile account through electronic money transferring service.

Once the money was transferred, the DSP said, the man would release the blindfolded hostage in a field.


He said the man was identified as Rana Liaqat, a Naik Muhammad village resident.

Sub Inspector Akhtar Hussain of the security branch said that Liaqat had recently threatened to kidnap a district monitoring officer’s children in Bahawalnagar. He had demanded Rs300,000 from the officer.

The sub inspector said that the officer had transferred Rs20,000 token money into his mobile account on Thursday. He said the mobile account number was traced and Liaqat was secretly monitored by intelligence officials.

Liaqat was arrested when he went to collect the money from a grocery store. He had initially tried tor run away, but was arrested after a short chase.

The DSP told The Express Tribune that Liaqat had chewed on some SIM cards he had been carrying and swallowed them. He said police had recovered Rs67,000 from him.
