Protest: Disobedience unless price hike withdrawn

“We will start a civil disobedience movement if our demands are not met,” says Anjuman-i-Tajraan City President.

FAISALABAD:

Several traders’ unions on Thursday decided to stage country wide protests and launch a civil disobedience movement if the government did not withdraw the imposition of new taxes and the increase in petroleum and electricity prices.

All Traders Organisation Pakistan President Khalid Parvaiz was speaking at a traders’ convention. He said the government’s policies were unfavourable for traders. “The traders are already finding it hard to run their businesses.

The increase in petroleum and electricity prices and imposition of new levies and taxes have worsened the situation,” he said. Anjuman-i-Tajraan City President Khwaja Shahid Razzaq Sikka said, “A conspiracy is being hatched against the traders through unfavourable amendments in tax laws.”

He said the traders would stage countrywide protests if the government did not withdraw the levies, taxes and increase in petroleum and electricity prices by October 26. “We will start a civil disobedience movement if our demands are not met,” he added.
