MULTAN:

A man arrested for killing his two-year-old son in Muzaffargarh was confessed to the killing, police said.

He has told police that he killed the child because he doubted its paternity.

Police said Muhammad Riaz, a resident of Tabbi village in Khangarh, was a drug addict.

They said two days ago, Riaz had approached the Khangarh police and told them that his son had been kidnapped. He said he suspected that they had killed the child.

Inspector Qaisar Husnain told The Express Tribune that they had filed Riaz’s complaint and started investigation.

However, he said, during investigation, they discovered that Riaz had been visiting a specific spot in the field under a mango tree every day. He said some residents told police that he had been visiting the spot for three days. The first day, they said, when they saw him, he was carrying a shovel.

Inspector Husnain said when the place under the mango tree was dug, they found a child’s body cut into sidereal pieces. They said he was later identified as Husnain’s missing son.

Riaz was arrested from his house. He later told police that he was a drug addict. He said he would remain away from house for days. He alleged that his wife was having affairs with several men behind his back. He said his brother and father had told him that he had seen men visiting his house in his absence. He said he had suspected that the child was not his.

He said he had decided to kill the boy to punish his wife. He said he had taken the child to the field. He then cut his throat and his body into several pieces. He said he dug a hole and buried the child there. He said he visited the place everyday to ensure that it had not been discovered.

Later addressing a press conference, District Police Officer Rana Abdul Jabbar lauded the police team that made the arrest for their vigilance. He said Riaz had two more sons, five- and three-years-old.

He said their mother had fainted on hearing the news. She was taken to the Khangarh district headquarters hospital, where doctors treating her said that she had suffered a shock and was not fit to talk to the police.

The DPO said that the police had also arrested Riaz’s brother and father.
