Gold shop robbery: Robber beaten to death

An accomplice arrested, four others flee with 180 tolas of gold.

Scores of residents in Mamu Kanjan beat a robber to death on Wednesday after one of the residents was shot dead in a robbery attempt. One of his five accomplices was also beaten up, but later rescued by the police. The rest fled.


Mamu Kanjan police said six armed men had forced into a gold jewellery shop in the Jewellery Market.

They said some of the robbers held up the shopkeepers and the customers, and their accomplices filled bags of gold.

They said shop owners Muhammad Shahid and Muhammad Maqbool raised an alarm getting attention of other shopkeepers in the market, who gathered in front of the shop.

Police said when the robbers saw the men, they tried to flee. On their way out one of them shot several times in the air. One of the bullets hit a fruit vendor, Tanveer Ahmed, who died on the spot.

Two of the robbers were caught. The rest managed to flee with 180 tolas of gold.



The robber who had fired the shot was beaten up. Later some residents of the area joined them in the beating. Some of them had brought sticks and bricks in their hands to hit the robber.


They tied his with a rope and dragged his on the road.

Police arrived at the scene and rescued both the robbers from the mob.

One of them had fainted. He died on his way to a hospital. The second robber was given first aid and taken to the police station.

Witnesses said the mob was so angry that some of the men attacked the police for trying to take the robbers away.

Saddar SP Rana Shujaah and DSP Khalid Mehmood Tahir also visited the scene to stop the mob.

The SP said that a police team had been formed to look for the robbers who fled.

He said he hoped to get useful information from the arrested robber.

An area policeman, speaking on a condition of anonymity, told The Express Tribune that preliminary investigation had revealed that the arrested robber was a police constable from Sahiwal.

He said he was currently deployed in Lahore.

When asked, the SP was hesitant to give a clear answer. He said investigation was still ongoing.
