Major (retd) Qamar Zaman Chaudhry has been all over the place but in a good way. His 42-year career has taken him to all parts of Pakistan where he has served in leading positions in bureaucracy.

But before his civil service tenure which began in 1982, he served in the army and was an aide-de-camp to Gen Ziaul Haq in late 1980. As a civil servant, he has worked on a variety of assignments
and positions – from that of assistant political agent, assistant commissioner, deputy commissioner, secretary local government, home secretary, housing secretary, joint secretary aviation, additional secretary commerce to chief secretary Gilgit-Baltistan.


In September 2009, Zaman replaced Syed Kamal Shah as Interior Secretary and played a vital role in resolving border-related issues with India. He joined District Management Group and remained a part of sixth common of Civil Service of Pakistan.

He has also served as the chairman of Capital Development Authority – where he was recognised as an administrator who could always be counted upon to deliver. He has also served as chief secretary Northern Areas and Punjab. Apart from working as chief commissioner Islamabad, Lahore and Rawalpindi, Zaman has also served as executive director of the Higher Education Commission.
