Six people were killed and three others injured on Sunday during robberies in Okara and Burewala.

Two of the three robberies involved the same robbers, police told The Express Tribune. They said the deceased included a robber, who was hit by a bullet fired by an accomplice.

In Okara, police said, three armed men broke into a house in Muhammadpura Colony at dawn. They said the owner of the house, Wali Muhammad, had left for morning prayers at the neighbourhood mosque. His wife, Shamim Akhtar, and son, Muhammad Naeem, were home.

Police said when Naeem tried to stop the robbers and started shouting for help, one of the robbers shot him, killing him on the spot. When his mother started shouting, they shot her too.

The robbers fled. Some neighbours who rushed to their house on hearing the shots, found the woman and her son lying in a pool of blood. They informed the police. The bodies were sent for post-mortem examination. A case has been filed with Wali Muhammad as the complainant.

DPO Babar Bakht said the same robbers had later entered another house in Gulab Singh area. He said the family were sleeping in the lawn. He said Muhammad Ishaq, the owner of the house, noticed them and shouted for help. One of the robbers shot him, killing him on the spot.

He said Ishaq’s sons Muhammad Afzal and Muhammad Tariq grabbed one of the robbers. He said one of the robbers also shot their mother for putting up resistance when he tried to snatch the gold earrings that she was wearing. She died on the spot. The other tried to free the accomplice Afzal and Tariq had caught. He fired several shots hitting his accomplice as well as the two brothers.

Afzal and Tariq were taken to the district headquarters hospital, where they were later reported to be out of danger.

The robbers carried their injured accomplice as they fled. Police said his body was later discovered from a field five kilometers from the crime scene.

A case has been registered at Depalpur Saddar police station.

Two killed by robbers

Also on Sunday, robbers killed two street vendors in Gajju Mandi in Burewala.

Police said three armed men were fleeing after taking 200 grams of gold from a jewellery shop. They said two fruit vendors- 16-year-old Faheem and 25-year-old Basharat- saw them. They and the shop owner, Muhammad Shehzad, ran after the robbers.

On seeing the men, the robbers shot them, killing Faheem and Basharat on the spot. Shehzad was injured and was taken to tehsil headquarters hospital by some passers-by. Doctors treating him said that his condition was critical. They said he had been shot twice in the abdomen. The robbers had fled.

Following the incident, street vendors in the area protested against the police for their failure to arrest the robbers.

They placed the bodies on the highway connecting Multan and Lahore. They later handed the bodies to the families after they were told that a case had been registered and that a police team had been formed to arrest the suspects.
