PESHAWAR:

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Chief Minister Pervez Khattak has lifted the ban on new recruitments at Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan (AWKUM) despite the institution’s non-compliance over submitting past recruitment details as requested by the Higher Education Department (HED).

On July 5, the provincial government banned recruitment in all public universities across K-P until recruitment details for those hired during the previous government’s tenure – from 2008 to 2013 – are submitted. The HED was directed to collect the data.

The process was undertaken after the chief minister’s complaint cell received several complaints of irregularities in appointments in public sector universities. The HED started collecting data from around eight universities and asked them to submit details.

“Most of the universities except for AWKUM have provided details of their five-year hiring record. AWKUM has been using delaying tactics and could not send in the details,” said an HED official requesting anonymity since he was not authorised to speak to the media.

An inquiry is also underway to probe irregular appointments at AWKUM and will soon be completed and sent to the CM, the official added. Despite these developments, the ban has been lifted.

“The ban was initially imposed on the order of the chief minister and it was lifted on his directives as well. This will allow hiring to fill vacant posts for BPS-17 and above,” he said.

Hiring restrictions were removed for other universities that sent in the requested details and a notification was issued in this regard. Orders to remove restrictions for AWKUM have also been received and a notification is expected to be issued on Monday.

Adviser to the CM on Higher Education, Mushtaq Ghani, had earlier explained the recruitment ban was placed following complaints of irregularities. He, however, could not be reached for comments despite several attempts.
