MULTAN:
Bahauddin Zakariya University’s Food Sciences Department has received grants worth more than Rs30 million because of their work for multinational companies, Food Sciences Chairman Saeed Akhtar told The Express Tribune at the inauguration of a resource centre for the department on Wednesday.
“The department aims to educate students on how to manufacture food at low cost while maintaining health standards,” he said.
“The department is currently working on how to improve milk production and distribution in south Punjab,” Akhtar said. The aim was to ensure the supply of pure milk among poor people, he said, loose milk carries a lot of impurities and generally not checked for quality. “A common practice is to mix buffalo and cow milk to earn more profit,” he said.
Akhtar said the grants would help the department improve its education standards and research strategy for various projects. “The US and UK governments have also appreciated our research in the area of low-cost production of high standard products,” he said.
The resource centre was inaugurated by Bahauddin Zakariya University Vice Chancellor Syed Khawaja Alqama and American Society for Microbiology’s Ambassador to Pakistan Shahana Arooj Kazmi. The American Society for Microbiology donated more than 500 books to the department’s library.
The resource centre will help further collaborative projects with international universities, he said.
Kazmi said that the Society aimed to educate students from rural areas in south Punjab and bring about a general rise in health and food standards in the country. “I am very pleased with the work done here. The students showed me 40 high quality products that they developed at the lowest possible cost,” she said.
The vice chancellor lauded the department’s efforts, “The University will market the products developed here for free. That will help generate millions of rupees.”
