FAISALABAD:

A Qing Qi rickshaw driver was killed on Wednesday for putting up resistance to robbers.

Peoples Colony police said that Shahida Parveen, a resident of Chak 203-RB, Mananwala, had withdrawn Rs600,000 from the Habib Bank Limited branch on Susan Road. As she approached her car, two armed men riding a motorcycle stopped her and snatched her purse at gunpoint. Police said one of the robbers fired shots when she tried to run away with the purse.

While she remained unharmed, a bullet hit Qing Qi rickshaw driver Muhammad Hussain, a resident of Khalsa College Colony near Municipal Degree College, who was passing by. Hearing the shots, police said, a security guard at the nearby National Saving Centre shot at the robbers. Both of them fled the scene.

The injured man was taken to Allied Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The body was then sent for a post-mortem examination.

Dr Anees Akhtar at the hospital told The Express Tribune that Hussain had been hit thrice in the stomach. He said he had died before he was brought to the hospital.

Muhammad Rasheed, a relative of the deceased, said that he was survived by three children and a widow. He said Hussain was recently diagnosed with diabetes. He said some friends and relatives had collected money for him to undergo a surgery in which doctors cut his toes after prolonged infection.

A police team headed by Peoples Colony station house officer visited the scene.

The SHO said that evidence collected from the scene had been sent to a forensic laboratory.
