Saddar police on Saturday arrested a man for raping a 10-year-old girl in Gojra.
Station House Officer Rana Muhammad Yar told The Express Tribune that *Altaf Ahmad had confessed to sexually assaulting *Farya, a student of grade six, on Friday.
He said a court had awarded police a three-day physical remand of the suspect.
Police said *Farya had been living with her grandfather in Chak 244-GB after her father’s death last year.
The girl, police said, took Quran classes from Ahmad’s mother. On Friday, police said Ahmad’s mother was not home when he raped the girl and fled.
*Farya was taken to Gojra General Hospital where a medical examination found that she had been raped.
SHO Rana Muhammad Yar said Ahmad had been arrested after the girl’s grandfather filed a complaint with the police.
“We are collecting evidence and recording the statements of the witnesses,” Station House Officer said.
Scores of residents of Chak 244-GB took to the streets on Saturday and demanded strict punishment for *Ahmad.
Muhammad Akram, one of the protestors, said that it was unfortunate that a child had been raped at a house where Quran was taught.
The girl’s grandfather said, “We had always considered the house a safe place and entrusted our children to them.”
*Names have been changed to protect identities
