BAHAWALPUR:

Bahawal Victoria Hospital, one of the oldest hospitals in the Punjab, caters to almost 10 million residents of the city but does not have an intensive care unit.

Construction of an ICU started six years ago has not been completed due to the non-provision of funds, hospital officials told The Express Tribune. Bahawal Victoria Hospital, established in 1906, has 1,400 beds. Construction on an ICU began at the hospital in 2007, hospital officials said. It could not be completed because funds were not allotted in 2009 and subsequent years. The hospital’s administration set up a makeshift ICU with seven beds in two rooms in 2005. Medical Superintendent Muhammad Irshad told The Express Tribune that the hospital had sent a proposal to the government asking for Rs310 million to complete the construction of the ICU, procure necessary equipment and add 30 beds.

The proposal also requested 141 gazetted vacancies and 74 non-gazetted vacancies.
