Mathira, the new cross-border item queen
Pakistani VJ-turned-model says India and Pakistan share the same culture.

Yet another controversial queen has crossed over to India, but this time in a different realm of cinema. While most have stuck to commercial Bollywood, yoga instructor-turned-VJ Mathira has opted for Punjabi cinema to make her Indian debut. She has recently performed an item song for Punjabi film Young Malang, produced by Rahulinder Singh Sidhu.
The song is titled Lakk Ch Current. “Basically, Rahulinder Singh is a very dear friend of mine and he approached me for this song, so I decided to go for it,” Mathira tells The Express Tribune.
According to Mathira, Young Malang, which released in India on September 20, is “a comedy film which is not completely romantic”. The song, in which the TV show host is seen wearing a ghaghra choli, was shot in Chandigarh around four months ago.
The song was shot some time ago, but she did not disclose the news to the local press until recently. “Why should I beat the drums and be stupid before it all happens,” she asserts.
Nevertheless, it appears Mathira, too, is joining the ranks of local actors who feel that India and Pakistan are all the same. “We share exactly the same culture. No matter how much we want to change, we will be like each other. The culture is the same, the taste of our food is the same and our night life is the same too,” she said.
Mathira recently starred in Pakistan’s first mainstream item song Bas Teri Hi Kami in Humayun Saeed’s box office hit Main Hoon Shahid Afridi. “I always challenge the social norms that confine a woman to four walls in the name of social bonds,” she said in an earlier interview. “I walk ahead of the people and keep pace with changing social norms.”
