KARACHI:
The trend of upsets continued in the 7th DG Rangers (Sindh) Open Squash Championship as fourth-seed Farhan Zaman stunned top seed Nasir Iqbal with a 3-2 win in the semi-final at the DG Rangers Jahangir Khan Squash Complex in North Nazimabad.
Iqbal started off brilliantly, winning the first two games easily but Zaman bounced back to bring the match to 2-2.
However, it was Zaman who held his nerve and clinched the tie with scores of 2-11, 3-11, 11-6, 11-3 and 11-9 in 58 minutes.
Iqbal admitted his opponent was the better player on the day.
“It would be unfair if I wouldn’t appreciate Farhan because he played out of his skin,” he told The Express Tribune.
“It’s not easy from being two games down to make a comeback and then win the decider when it’s tied at 9-9. He is a dangerous player because of his racquet skills and he made me stretch in the third game where my hamstring muscle was pulled. I tried to carry on with the game but couldn’t recover from the stress and lost.”
Meanwhile, Tayyab Aslam pulled off an impressive 3-2 victory against Sheikh Saqib as both athletes tested each other’s resolve.
He won with a scoreline of 13-11, 7-11, 11-9, 11-13 and 11-9.
