Rape trials: Rally demands reform of criminal justice system

The participants of a rally on Tuesday stressed the need for reforming the criminal justice system to ensure fair and speedy trials, especially in rape cases.
The rally was organised by the National Commission for Justice and Peace (NCJP) to condemn the recent rape incidents in the Punjab.
The protesters gathered in front of the Faisalabad Press Club and shouted slogans demanding strict punishment for rapists. More than 300 rights activists, labour union workers, lawyers, teachers and students participated in the rally.
NCJP Director Nisar Barkat said the government, judiciary and the civil society all needed to play their part in provision of a secure environment for children. He demanded that the government train better police officials and investigation officers.
