Karachi, Thatta reworked: Sindh govt to carve two districts
PPP Karachi division President Qadir Patel says two more districts were suggested for Karachi.
KARACHI:
Authorities in Sindh have decided to carve out two new districts in Karachi and Thatta, a move that would transform Lyari and Sijawal into provincial districts. The decision was taken at a meeting presided over by Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah on Monday.
Sources close to Pakistan Peoples Party told The Express Tribune that the initial idea was to carve two districts from Karachi namely Lyari and Gadap. But later, it was decided to make Lyari the only district.
At the same time, Thatta will be bifurcated by making Sijawal a new district. “The areas located on the right side of River Indus will fall under the domain of prevailing Thatta district while the left side will come under the purview of the proposed Sijawal district,” an official said.
PPP Karachi division President Qadir Patel said two more districts were suggested for Karachi. Senior Minister Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, however, said that the only proposal was to carve out one district in Karachi and another in Thatta.
