KARACHI:
The Women’s Action Forum (WAF) celebrated its long struggle for women rights on Monday, saying that their fight against discriminatory laws has brought noticeable change in the lives of women in Pakistan. The 32nd celebration day was held at the WAF’s office where Jordan’s famous human rights activist, Asma Khadar, was the chief guest. Anis Haroon, Kausar Saeed Khan, Mahnaz Rahman and other women rights activists participated and counted the long struggle. “It is a long struggle and we have to ensure more women rights,” said Rahman. Khadar compared her country’s status of women with Pakistan, saying that their women were given voting rights in 1974.  During the time of former president Ziaul Haq, a girl in Karachi in 1981 was given the sentence of flogging for marrying of her own choice, several women’s rights activists gathered at Shirkatgah office on September 16, 1981, to protest the decision.
