Helping hand: US to boost Pak agriculture sector

Pakistan and the United States (US) on Wednesday agreed to enhance scope of scientific research in agricultural sector to benefit from the modern technology.
Agricultural Counselor of US Embassy in Pakistan Clay Hamilton called on Federal Minister for National Food Security & Research (NFSR) Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan and discussed possibilities to launch different programmes for increasing farmer’s income in the country.
The minister said the government was fully committed to modernise the agricultural infrastructure of the country and appreciated the efforts of United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) by launching various projects of agri-development. He discussed the plan for the export of Pakistani mangoes to the US markets to and possibilities for facilitating its exporters.
Hamilton said that USDA in collaboration with provincial livestock departments was also working on a programme to control Foot And Mouth Disease (FMD) in animals as well as to send Pakistani wheat scientists to the US for further capacity building and training programmes to help increase yield.
He said that USDA was also planning a Bio Technology conference later this year and seek the participation and support of NFSR. Chairman Pakistan Agriculture Research Council Dr Iftikhar Ahmed and other senior officials of the ministry attended the meeting.
