Violence round-up: Political worker among five killed in city

A political worker and four other people lost their lives in separate acts of violence in the city on Tuesday.


In Orangi Town, a worker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) was shot dead within the limits of Iqbal Market police station. The victim was identified as Rasheed Abbas. SHO Amjad Kiyani said he was associated with the MQM unit-124. Abbas was sitting near his house when two armed motorcyclists opened fire. He was shot multiple times and died on the spot. The body was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for an autopsy.


A rickshaw driver, Salahuddin Akram, 32, was shot dead near Lea Market within the Napier police remits. Police officials said that victim was waiting for passengers when unidentified motorcyclists opened fire on him. A passer-by, Adnan, was also wounded in the incident. They were taken to the Civil Hospital Karachi.

Yousuf Basit, 60, was found dead near railway tracks on Drigh Road. Police officials said that the victim was a resident of Landhi area. He was hit by a sharp weapon on his head. The motive, however, has yet to be ascertained.

Another rickshaw driver was killed in the Jamshed Quarters area. The man was identified as 50-year-old Raees Younus. Police officials said a friend of the victim, Jamil, had attacked him with a concerte block over some dispute when they were sitting near their residence, but the accused escaped after the incident.

A vegetable vendor, Nasir Atari, 35, was shot dead in the New Karachi Industrial Area police remits. Police officials said that the incident took place when the victim was going to the New Sabzi Mandi area after buying vegetables.
