Sania survives scare to reach tennis final
India’s Sania Mirza claws her way back to defeat Olivia Rogowska 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the final.
NEW DEHLI:
India’s Sania Mirza clawed her way back from a 6-1, 3-1 deficit to defeat Olivia Rogowska 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the final of the Commonwealth Games.
Mirza showed more control in the second set after losing the first, registering powerful ground strokes and sending three aces to help seal her win.
“I knew she wouldn’t win because otherwise she would have been in the top 50,” said Mirza. “When you’re not timing the ball well, you have to come up with something different. I’m very happy that I fought hard.”
Devvarman remains on top
Indian top-seed Somdev Devvarman beat Matt Ebden 6-3, 6-1 and will face another Australian Greg Jones in the final. Devvarman opened strongly, fully in control of the exchanges as Ebden struggled to stay with him, finishing his task in 71 minutes.
