Early farewell: Full court reference for SHC CJ postponed

The reference has been postponed till the parliamentary body decision is announced.

The reference was planned after a notification from the National Judicial Commission was issued on Monday to elevate Justice Alam to the apex court. SHC’s senior pursing judge, Justice Maqbool Baqar, was also elevated as next chief justice of the high court. PHOTO: FILE

KARACHI:
A full court reference to bid farewell to Sindh High Court (SHC) Chief Justice Mushir Alam upon his elevation to the Supreme Court has been postponed following some procedural issues, The Express Tribune has learnt.

The sources said that the SHC administrative authorities had fixed September 9 for a full court reference for CJ Mushir Alam, a tradition in the judiciary to bid farewell to the judge who either is elevated to the superior court or retires.

The reference was planned after a  notification from the National Judicial Commission was issued on Monday to elevate Justice Alam to the apex court. SHC’s senior pursing judge, Justice Maqbool Baqar, was also elevated as next chief justice of the high court.

However, the procedure is not complete since the parliamentary body has yet to give its decision on judges appointment. After it the prime minister would forward the final names to the president for appointment.

“The reference has been postponed till the decision of the parliamentary committee is announced, which can agree or disagree with the decision of the National Judicial Commission,” an official told The Express Tribune on the request of anonymity.

Realising the hurried decision, the SHC registrar office issued a circular regarding postponement of the full court reference. The date of full reference court would be announced later.
