KARACHI:

With the prime minister busy chalking out a strategy to fix Karachi’s law and order, the city witnessed another bloody day with over 12 people killed.

The first major loss came with the targeted killing of a Pakistan Navy captain, Muhammad Nadeem, who was shot dead near National Stadium. This was followed by the killing of a Rangers’ personnel during an alleged encounter in Lyari. The same attack also took the lives of three suspected gangsters.

The Rangers soldier, Sohail Akhtar, and suspected gangsters, Mullah Saleem, Aziz and Amanullah, were killed allegedly during a shoot-out in Lyari. Quoting Rangers’ officials, a policeman said that the Rangers team raided the house on a tip-off that Lyari’s notorious gangster, Jabbar Jhangu, was present at his hideout in Old Union Community Road in Lyari’s Shah Baig Lane. Jhangu is reportedly wanted by the police.

The paramilitary team came under heavy firing when they reached the site, said a Rangers spokesperson, adding that their soldier, Akhtar, died in this attack. The Rangers retaliated and managed to kill three of the suspected criminals while the others escaped. The relatives and neighbours staged a protest against the Rangers’ raid that shut down parts of the area. The residents claimed this was a ‘fake’ encounter and they were all innocent. Even Baghdadi SHO Munir Chandio told The Express Tribune that the suspected gangsters killed in the encounter had no past criminal records. An FIR No. 242/13 has, however, been registered on behalf of the Rangers officials.

Policemen targeted

Moreover, two political workers and a policeman were also killed on Wednesday. A 35-year-old worker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Shaikh Babar alias Shakeel Chohta, was shot dead near Dabba Morr in Orangi Town. Iqbal Market police said the deceased was associated with the MQM’s Unit 119.

In Pak Colony’s Jahanabad, the police found the beheaded body of a colleague, Malik Waqas Ahmed, who was dismissed from services. Ahmed’s friend, Muhammad Asif, who was an MQM supporter, was also found dead from Old Haji Camp. The police said that the two men were kidnapped on Tuesday from the same area. Ahmed was shot multiple times before his body was thrown away, said a police official. So far, the investigations suggest that Lyari gangsters might have been behind the killings, he added.

A 55-year-old police constable, Haji Javed, was shot dead in Orangi Town while he was on his way to work, said Pakistan Bazaar police officials. Within the same jurisdiction, Khursheed Malik, 50, and his 22-year-old son, Hilal, were gunned down. The victims were the relatives of ASI Shamshad Malik who was gunned down in Orangi Town on Tuesday.

In Shah Faisal Colony, a 24-year-old grocery shop owner, Imran Suleman, was shot dead. Some men came to his door and asked for him, said a police official. When he came out, they shot him multiple times and escaped.

A spiritual faith-healer was also shot dead in Haider Colony. Jamshed Quarters police said the deceased was identified as Rehan Yousuf, 40, who may have been targeted due to his sect.

Moreover, an alleged drug peddler was killed during an exchange of fire between two groups of drug peddlers in Chanesar Goth, Mehmoodabad. Ayaz Qadri, 28, had also been associated with political parties in the past.

Meanwhile, a 25-year-old Kutchi man, Muhammad Ali, was shot dead in Nayabad. A 36-year-old factory worker, Aijaz Ahmad, who belongs to the Ahmadiyya community, was also shot dead.
