KARACHI:
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif arrived in Karachi on Tuesday and plans to stay in the city for two days, Express News reported.
A guard of honour was presented to Nawaz upon his arrival to a ceremony held by the Pakistan Navy. The ceremony was held to commemorate the inclusion of the PNS Aslat in the navy.
PNS Aslat is the fourth F22-P Frigate inducted into the Pakistan Navy.
Nawaz gave a speech at the ceremony and is due to meet traders and members of the business community at the event.
After the ceremony, the PM went to the governor house where he will meet political leaders to discuss the situation of law and order in Karachi.
Security in the city was put on high alert to prepare for his arrival.
A cabinet meeting will be held on Wednesday, officials believe that the federal cabinet might give a nod to a ‘targeted or surgical operation’ in Karachi. The meeting will be chaired by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
Muhammad Haroon Agar, the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry president, had said that a delegation will meet the premier at 6.30pm at the Governor House where they will brief him on how the business community is suffering because of the rampant extortion and crime in the city. “We just want peace. It is at the discretion of the government to call army or mobilise the police and Rangers (instead).”
There seems to be consensus on what needs to be done.
The government has also invited Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Farooq Sattar to attend the meeting. MQM had called for Karachi to be administered under the army and is the only political party that wants the army involved.
All eyes are on this meeting, which is likely to result in important decisions regarding the city’s law and order situation.
