ISLAMABAD:

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday restrained the Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (FBISE) from holding an  awards distribution ceremony of position holders which was scheduled for September 26.

IHC Chief Justice Justice Muhammad Anwar Khan Kasi issued the restraining order in response to petitions filed by two students who had challenged the criteria for choosing position holders and said they were ignored despite scoring the highest marks.

Sad Jan and Aabera Saeed students of FBISE, while challenging the board’s criteria to select top position holders maintained that it was discriminatory.

Advocate Raja Inam maintained that Jan had secured 927 marks in the humanities group, but Sara Noreen was selected as the top position holder with 914 marks. Abeera had secured 1,010 marks in the science group, yet only Naveera Tahir, who secured the same marks, was declared second.

The petitioner’s counsel argued that FBISE neglected his clients who had secured top positions and requested the court to direct the board to declare them as such.

He also asked the court to restrain FBISE from holding the award distribution ceremony.  The court issued notice to FBISE chairperson and adjourned the matter till the next date to be fixed by the registrar’s office later.
