PESHAWAR:

Important interim appointments were made on Monday by the Awami National Party’s (ANP) provincial election commission as part of the process of reorganising the party.

In a joint meeting between the ANP election commission and organising committee members held at Bacha Khan Markaz, Sadruddin Marwat was appointed provincial spokesperson, Jamila Gilani the provincial secretary and Jafar Shah the finance secretary for an interim period. The aim of these appointments is to prescribe an intra-party election procedure and to look into ANP’s organisational issues.

The participants decided another meeting will be convened soon to work out a strategy for reorganising the party in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata), as well as to form committees to carry out intra-party elections at district levels.

Former provincial president Afrasiab Khattak, former provincial spokesperson Mian Iftikhar Hussain and other senior members besides members of ANP’s election commission participated in the meeting.

Last week, ANP chief Asfandyar Wali Khan dissolved all party organisations including central, provincial and district cabinets while acting on the recommendations of the fact-finding commission’s report which the party had sought to identify the causes of its unprecedented defeat in the May 11 general elections.

“Our party performed poorly in the general elections … therefore, we have decided to reorganise,” Asfandyar said at a news conference in Wali Bagh, Charsadda.

Reading from a three-page report of the ANP’s fact-finding committee, Asfandyar said while ‘conspiracies’ against the ANP had affected its performance in the elections, ‘internal weaknesses’ also cost the party dearly.
