MPA goes to court over qualifications

A minority MPA goes to court to challenge a decision to declare his educational qualifications as fake.

KARACHI:
A minority MPA has gone to court to challenge a decision to declare his educational qualifications as fake.

A division bench of the Sindh High Court (SHC) issued notices on Thursday to the Election Commission of Pakistan, Higher Education Commission, University of Sindh, Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Hyderabad (BISEH) and other respondents for Oct 21 in a petition filed by minority MPA Pitambar Sehwani elected on a reserved seat in the general elections of 2008.

The petitioner questioned the HEC’s decision to declare his educational credentials doubtful, leading to his disqualification.

The petitioner has alleged that he received a telephone call from a respondent, the chairman of the BISEH, who demanded graft and threatened to declare his intermediate certificate fake.

Barrister Zamir Ghumro, counsel for the petitioner, argued that his client was being subjected to political victimisation and that his educational qualifications are genuine.

He said that the HEC’s decision and the decision to publish his name were illegal.

The bench issued pre-admission notices to the ECP, HEC, BISEH, SU, Federal Cabinet Secretary, Secretary Education Sindh and other respondents for Oct 21.
