Jinnah Avenue standoff: Sikandar declared mentally fit for police questioning
Muhamad Sikandar, the gunman who engaged law enforcement agencies in a stand-off that lasted for five hours on the federal capital’s Jinnah Avenue on August 15, was declared mentally competent on Saturday.
Dr Ayesha, the official spokesperson for the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims), said he was now in a position to record his statement with the police, although he is still not physically
well enough to be discharged.
“The police can record his statement any time, he has no psychiatric disorders and it is possible that he might have consumed some kind of drugs on the day of the incident,” she said.
According to the doctor, the bullet wounds on his leg and chest and his fractured leg still need time to heal.
“It will take around six to seven weeks to recover from all the injuries. Only then can he be declared physically fit to be discharged,” she said.
Sikandar is under tight security and police officials are deployed both in and outside his room round-the-clock, the Pims spokesperson said, while rubbishing speculation that he tried to escape a few days ago.
