Iphone: Apple introduces trade-in programme

The programme will enable US iPhone owners to trade their smartphones for credit towards buying new models.

SAN FRANCISCO:
On Friday Apple began a trade-in programme for US iPhone owners enabling them to trade their smartphones for credit towards buying new models. Apple did not give any hints on how much credit it would give customers who participate in the trade-in programme. However, it is likely the price will include factors like condition, the model, and how long the customer has had it. The programme kicked off in the wake of unconfirmed reports of an event on September 10 where Apple unveils new iPhones ranging from a gold handset to a low-price version aimed at emerging markets. As the smartphone market in the United States and other Western countries matures, companies may have better luck encouraging upgrades rather than reaching out to first-time buyers, according to Gartner analyst Van Baker.
