Unemployment: Workers demand restoration of Sasti Roti scheme
Sasti Roti scheme was launched by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz-led provincial government during its previous term.
FAISALABAD:
Scores of mechanical tandoor workers in the city staged a demonstration on Friday demanding that the government restore the Sasti Roti scheme.
The demonstrators marched on various roads before they sat in front of the District Government Secretariat. They blocked the Zila Council Chowk causing a suspension of traffic for more than three hours. Some of them were wearing dried rotis around their necks.
Muhammad Anwar, one of the protesters, said that the suspension of the Sasti Roti scheme had turned hundreds of men working at the mechanical tandoors into unemployed people.
Shafiq Kiyani, another protester, said that besides being a source of employment for hundreds of men, the Sasti Roti scheme provided relief for the poor.
