QUETTA: Balochistan Assembly passed Balochistan Local Government (Amendment) Bill 2013 on Friday.

The bill was moved by Provincial Minister Abdul Raheem Ziaratwal in the Balochistan Assembly session which was chaired by Deputy Speaker Abdul Qudoos Bezenjo.

The bill was unanimously accepted.

It was stated that the objective of passing the bill was to bring into effect the local government laws so that elections of the local bodies could be held in accordance with the Constitution of Pakistan. This was suggested by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The Government of Balochistan had promulgated Balochistan Local Government Act in 2010 but had its provisions further amended as directed by ECP so that elections could be held on a party basis.

The bill was moved in compliance with the Supreme Court of Pakistan’s orders to hold the local government election by September 15.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry had said that any date beyond September would not be acceptable. Sindh and Punjab have passed their respective local government bills.
