ISLAMABAD:

The Election Commission of Pakistan on Wednesday set aside the decision of the district returning officer (DRO) and ordered recount of votes polled for the by-elections in Punjab Assembly constituency PP-150 (Lahore).

The ECP decision has raised high hopes for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) as the party might grab this seat in the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) stronghold.

After a neck-and-neck contest, PML-N’s Mian Marghoob was declared winner according to unofficial results with a close margin of 374 votes from the runners up, PTI’s Mahr Wajid.

The PML-N candidate had secured a total of 18,870 votes against PTI candidate’s 18,494. At least 375 votes were rejected.

The PTI had sought recounting in the constituency but the DRO had rejected the plea, prompting PTI workers to stage a sit-in on The Mall Road.

Acting Chief Election Commissioner Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jilani had taken suo moto notice of the protests and summoned all the candidates to plead their cases.
