KARACHI:
The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) submitted a requisition to call a Sindh Assembly session over their demand for army supervision in Karachi, Express News reported on Wednesday.

MQM leaders Sardar Ahmed and Khawaja Izharul Hasan held a press conference in Karachi where they reiterated that rangers and police have failed to rescue the city from criminal elements. They added that military supervision is lawful and democratic in reference to section 149 of the Constitution.

While talking to the media Ahmed said that the prevailing situation in the city has entered a downward spiral.

Hasan stated that the army has previously been deployed to deal with many other civil issues such as heavy rains and flooding. He mentioned that the military also facilitated the general elections, hence they could be called in to control the prevailing violence in the city as well.

“Karachi is the economic hub of the country but ongoing violence has forced residents, especially members of the business community, to flee from the city,” Hasan said.
