Unrest: Shootings leave five dead in Karachi
A dozen or so gunmen mowed down an MQM worker and two others who were seated outside the Kharadar Jamaat Khana.
KARACHI:
Five people, including three Muttahida Qaumi Movement sympathisers, were shot dead Tuesday night in an upsurge of violence in the country’s largest city.
A dozen or so gunmen mowed down an MQM worker and two others who were seated outside the Kharadar Jamaat Khana, police told The Express Tribune.
The incident caused panic in the area with commercial activities temporarily suspended to protest the killing. Local residents staged a protest against Lyari gangsters, chanting slogans against the assailants of the cold-blooded gunmen. Locals also reiterated their disapproval of the inability of security officials to curb crime in the area.
DSP Lodhi said that the armed men were apparently Lyari gangsters and the assault was probably linked to the ongoing wave of fresh violence in Lyari. In another incident, a 12-year-old girl was shot during an armed clash between two groups within the limits of the PIB Colony. According to DSP Nasir Lodhi, the crossfire between the groups was linked to Lyari violence and a stray bullet hit the young girl fatally.
A young man was found dead in Saudabad, who, the police say, was shot multiple times after being kidnapped.
