CHITRAL:

An MMBS student committed suicide after killing his psychiatrist in Chitral city on Monday.

Third-year medical student Sardar Ayub, a resident of Bashqir in Garam Chashma, had been visiting psychiatrist Dr Farhana Mehmood, 26, at Aga Khan Health Service (AKHS) to seek help for depression for the last six months, said an AKHS official requesting anonymity.

He explained Ayub had achieved first position in his Matric and Intermediate exams, but could not immediately secure admission to a medical college because of his weak financial position.

“He (Ayub) managed to get admission in a medical school in Peshawar the next year, however, with each passing day his financial condition deteriorated. He later sought psychiatric help from Mehmood,” he added.

The AKHS official said Ayub arrived for his appointment at AKHS at 9:30am on Monday. Upon entering the psychiatrist’s room, Ayub opened fire at Dr Mehmood, killing her on the spot. He then proceeded to shoot himself.

Chitral city police official Hussain Ahmad said he received a report about the incident and arrived at the site to shift the bodies to District Headquarters Hospital. “The post-mortem revealed Ayub shot the woman five times at point blank range before killing himself,” said Ahmad.

The motive behind the murder could not be ascertained till the filing of this report. Police have registered a case and an investigation is underway.
